JOHNNY COUNTS ROAD HAZARD RATING

Issued: 04/05/24 at 0600hrs

Expires: 04/08/24 at 0559hrs

Rating:

LEVEL 3: AVALANCHE WATCH

Avalanche Forecast:

Avalanche activity above the road IS EXPECTED. Resulting avalanche debris reaching the road grade is LIKELY. Personal restrictions are in effect. Explosive mitigation may occur.

Travel Advisory:

It is recommended that the JC Road be closed on Friday April 5th at 1200hrs and re-opened on Saturday April 6th at 0600hrs.

Before reopening the JC Road, it is recommended that SRSCISD and/or GTPM staff sweep the road to inspect for avalanche debris affecting the roadway.

When re-opened the hazard rating will be LEVEL 2: AVALANCHE STATEMENT and the travel advisory listed below will be recommended.

Through travel only in the JC Road corridor, do not stop vehicles.

It is recommended that any person operating equipment in the corridor wear an avalanche transceiver and have access to rescue equipment.

Snowpack and Weather Summary:

With recent daytime temperatures well above freezing and the lack of extended duration below freezing temperatures at night, liquid water is moving through the snowpack.

This water can pool on weak layers within the snowpack which could rapidly decrease the strength of the snowpack, leading to wet slab avalanche activity.

Precipitation in the form of rain returns to our area this afternoon, before transitioning to snow this evening. This precipitation will be accompanied by gusty southeast through southwest winds along with colder temperatures. Snow and colder temperatures can be expected each day through the weekend.
